Unwanted, good quality pieces of solid wood furniture are finding themselves at landfill. This makes me sad. These pieces are often sturdy, hand-made and beautiful, being discarded for reasons such as; house clearance, going out of fashion, no space in the home, unable to sell, lack of creativity!

Unwanted, good quality pieces of solid wood furniture are finding themselves at landfill. This makes me sad. These pieces are often sturdy, hand-made and beautiful, being discarded for reasons such as; house clearance, going out of fashion, no space in the home, unable to sell, lack of creativity!
The majority of these discarded pieces just need a little love and imagination - an upcycle! Furniture can be sanded, modified, glued, painted, decoupaged, etc., waking them up and giving them new life.
Upcycling extends the life of old furniture, stops them ending up in landfill, reduces the need to chop down trees to build new furniture (helping avoid deforestation) - plus allows the Happy Upcycler a chance to create one-off bespoke/unique decorative pieces of furniture for your home. Some of my upcycles are unusual and make lovely talking pieces in the home.

Luckily, I frequently get offered furniture, prior to them being thrown away.
This makes me happy.
Annie Sloan chalk paint is my favoured choice, being 100% water based. There are such gorgeous colour options. I also use her wax and lacquer to protect my finishes.
These paints are easy to blend and also ideal to use in a child's bedroom,

These paints are easy to blend and also ideal to use in a child's bedroom, as the paints contain minimal levels of VOC (volatile organic compounds): emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids.
Sometimes, when upcycling, I leave a nod to the past with natural woods showing through, but other times I just go all out with bold colours.
I use different painting techniques depending on the piece and on occasions, I will decoupage. Animal print napkin decoupage always sells well.

I was not particularly into art or drawing as a kid, but that didn't stop me from trying as an adult.
As we grow older, we often become more creative. I know that I have. In the past 4 years I have undertaken the following courses:

- painting upcycled furniture, 8 evening classes via The City of Edinburgh Council at Craigroyston Community High School

- Upcycling Vintage Furniture with Painting techniques ONLINE Domestika Course, by Chloe Kempster
- 5-day Annie Sloan Furniture Painting Retreat near Bristol, run by the very talented Tristan Merriam at Doghead Designs - where the wonderful Annie Sloan joined us for 2 days of the course. NOTE: I would highly recommend this to anyone!
I started upcycling furniture quite a few years ago as a hobby. Pushing myself to attend courses, networking with fellow furniture artists, plus practice, practice, practice, I am now confident and proud of my work. I upcycle quality furniture full-time as the Happy Upcycler, working from home in my little workshop/garage.
I sell my furniture to my followers, by social media or via Etsy.com and prices include delivery within UK mainland. NOTE: prices are cheaper if sold locally for personal collection.
